WOW, what a weekend!
Friday night, my wife and I had dinner with a great friend. I never knew three people could eat that much sushi in one sitting. Afterward I spent way too much money on comic books at Sarge’s. I can’t help myself – I love Matt Fraction’s writing on Iron Man.
Saturday I loaded the wife and assorted Sky Pirates merchandise into the car and headed up to the Paint and Pixel Festival. Great show, great podcast with Matman, covered the cost of the table and the ten dollar parking ticket. We had a surprise appearance from our graphic designer Steve Kuster that made my wife’s day. It warms my heart to see her smile like that again.
Now I’ve always written about finding the show that fits your book, niche shows, and shows that you make money at. I’ve never really told you why you should do small shows. You know those one day shows that sort of spring up out nowhere? Yeah those shows. Paint and Pixel spang up and we invested in a one day table. The cost of the table was just right and we sold some books, but that isn’t the real reason why I love small shows like this.
Here’s where I get to blow your minds. Ready? Here it comes. I love to do small shows like this because of the new people I meet. New people who have new art or a fresh idea that you’ve never heard before. Young kids mingle with adults in search of advice on how I did it and ask questions on how they can do it. Small shows are a great area to share advice and help people grow. Trust me when I say this, I want more people with colorful ideas to break into the indy scene to show off new art styles and crisp imaginations, concepts that are yet to be done tried on the comic pages.
It all boils down to the belief I have about comics. Comic book shows should always be moving forward. Yes it’s great to have the old veterans in the trenches. However with new ideas comes avenues that we can explore.
So if you get a chance to invest in a one day show, do it for more than just getting your hands on the fifty cent bins. Do it to help the little guys out. Do it to show that with the right passion you can bring any dream to life.
